Principle 1

The encapsulation of air by numerous, flexible Comfort Cells, provides primary adaptation to body contours due to the movement of cells amongst each other.

Principle 2

Deformation of the individual Comfort Cells provides secondary adaptation to minor body contours.

The Result

A dynamic but stable adaptation to body contour with a high level of pressure and shear relief.

History of Pressure Ulcers
Skin ulcers in the buttocks area are prevalent among wheelchair users that have limited mobility, decreased sensation or both. Many wheelchair users tend to sit on their cushions for extended periods of time. Previously, high pressures have been identified as one of the principle contributing factors in causing skin ulcers. As a result, cushion selection criteria continues to focus on decreasing overall and peak pressures while seated. This study is designed to establish the characteristics of pressure distribution while using cushions from The Comfort Company’s Vicair Technology line of products and to compare these cushions with commercially available cushions commonly used in clinical practice.

Cushions Tested
Comfort Company Adjuster, Comfort Company Vector, Roho High Profile Quadtro Select, Jay 2 Deep Contour, Jay 2, and Varilite Evolution

What Our Customers Have to Say About Vicair

"Optimal pressure distribution in combination with stability is what makes the Vicair cushion a functional seat cushion"
-Bengt Engstrom, P.T.

I just want to write and "Thank You" for introducing me to the Vicair cushions. I recently had done tilt and space chair with a high end air cushion on it for skin protection, he had stage 2 decub's in the past. After delivery I was ask every week to look at him in his chair, the staff and the therapist were unable to keep his pelvis back in the chair. We removed the pump from his room and staff was instructed to not inflate the cushion, but some way it was getting over inflated, and each time I saw him the cells were coming out of every place on the cover there was an opening. Even with the chair tilted he was sliding forward and would get on the edge of his seat pan. The staff were afraid he was going to slide completely out of the chair and onto the floor. After seeing your in-service on the Adjuster and with your help getting us a demo, we were able to try him on this cushion and be sure that it was going to work. Since putting him on the cushion and with proper adjustments to the anti thrust, building it up and removing some of the cells from under his ischial's we were able to keep his pelvis back and he is not sliding forward. I have not been ask to re-visit him since this time, and I do ask and check with staff and there are no reports of any redness or problems with keeping him in the chair.

Respectfully,
Trish Couch, ATS, CRTS

Some of the features that I really like about the Vector cushion that you provided me are: The cushion provides great stability which helps eliminate any shearing action. In addition, this stability provides a greater sense security. The cushion has an infinite amount of adjustment simply by adding or removing the air cells. The cushion provides a massaging action through movement of the air cells. The cushion is lightweight. The cushion is pliable enough that it automatically molds to the shape of your body making it comfortable. The cushion is extremely durable even in the most demanding situations ie, weight training.

Mrs. _______ has been a long-term care resident of Stillwater Health Care since 06/12/08 due to a GI bleed and anemia. She is very slim and has bilateral above knee amputations due to peripheral vascular disease. She also carries diagnoses of coronary artery disease, acute renal failure, atrial fibrillations, hypertension, breast cancer (status-post lumpectomy and lymph node dissection, refusing radiation and chemotherapy). She has macular degeneration, mild mitral valve regurgitation, lacunar stroke, dementia, arthritis, and hiatal hernia.

Mrs. ________ has complained of a sore bottom for several weeks. We have trialed multiple different cushions including the Stimulite honeycomb cushion, an Action gel cushion, a SkilCare gel/foam cushion, a ROHO Hi Profile cushion, and finally Comfort Company Vector 18 x 16. Mrs.________´s sore bottom had progressed to a Stage II would over her coccyx but, now appears to be healing since she has been using a trial Vector Cushion. She now has fewer complaints of a sore bottom. Dressing changes are completed every other day.
